SouthPaw or ....
I can’t even start to translate the gauntlet of my emotions
into words after watching this movie. Boxing movies tend to always do that. How
many of you remember “The Champ”? One of the first movies that I can remember
that made me cry. Not that I go around crying, cos I’m a thug nigga and niggas don’t
cry. OK, ok, ok, I cry sometimes. The worse part of it all was that I watched
the movie in a room full of girls and they were all crying but I had to act
tough. I eventually gave in.
Antoine Fuqua (Training day) directs this and does a great job.
The main role was to be Eminem ( 8 mile) but he dropped out at the last minute and the
role went to Jake Gyllenhaal.
As I said earlier, I cannot put my feelings -after seeing
this movie- into words and so I would leave you to watch it and draw your own
conclusions but in the interim, this is a brief on what the movie is all about.
Southpaw features Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy "The Great" Hope, the
reigning Light Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World. He's on top of the
world, career-wise and family-wise, until an unfortunate incident causes the
death of his wife (played by Rachel McAdams). Consumed by grief and reckless
behavior, he temporarily loses custody of his child. Now he must return to the
ring to win back his honor and his remaining family.
Million dollar baby is another sad one. Coincidentally another boxing movie
