Arrival
Regular readers would remember my prediction that eventually
movies would be used to teach in all levels of formal education and this movie
would serve as a perfect example.
The movie is billed as a science fiction movie about aliens
but turned out essentially to be a movie about language -or to be more concise-
about communication.
Aliens arrive on earth at 12 different countries around the world but
instead of attacking the earth as usual in our regular movies (one such movie
released not too long ago is Independence Day 2), It was obvious that the
aliens came to dialogue but the issue was, who would interpret what our extra-terrestrial
visitors had to say? In comes our language specialist Louise Banks played to perfection
by Amy Adams and mathematician Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) and what follows is
a wonderful lesson in communication.
What you might perceive, and how you might
express it is so important to whom you are trying to communicate to. Talk less
of aliens from a different dimension and with different thought processes from
us humans. The movie expressed this on a much deeper level than this being just
an attempt to understand a different language. It was the perception, the
sentence structure, their entire vocabulary, the attempt at communication or
miscommunication (whichever way you attempt to understand it) that almost led
to a world war and had our scientists running against time to save the world.
