Eddie the Eagle
In sports, the rooting is always mostly for the underdog, especially where
the neutral is concerned. More so , when the opponent is perceived as being
rich, strong and with all the resources not available to the underdog. I guess
subconsciously it represents our struggle against the “bourgeoisie”
of our world.
And so, most sports movies are always about the protagonist
battling against his much richer and stronger opponent. In the real world, this
is Leicester City winning the league against the mighty and rich Chelsea, Manchester
City, etc.
I digress.
After the above epistle, you guessed right, that this is a
true life “sports” movie. Michael ”Eddie” Edwards was an Olympic Ski Jumper who
prevailed against all the odds to compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics. He was
portrayed by Taron Edgerton and ably supported by Hugh Jackman who played a
down-on-his-luck former Ski Jumper turned Coach.
The movie is all about the plot line as it tries to stick as
close as possible to the facts. Character development was fantastic as it
starts with Eddie as a boy struggling with knee problems. As he grew up, his
fascination with the Olympics and determination to succeed as a ski jumper against
all odds increased.
Beautiful!
At the crowning moment, you can’t help but feel all the
emotions that must have been coursing through him at that moment.
Thumbs up to everyone involved in bringing Eddie the Eagle’s
life and moments to the big screen.
